A Hen Party...

In a Dark, Dark Wood - Ruth Ware

Last night I had every intention of knocking out one of my 'must' read ARC's but I really was in the mood to just read whatever the hell I wanted, so I did and In a Dark, Dark Wood is what I chose. It was a good choice & the perfect story to read late at night when your home alone or everyone is in bed.

It's about a group of old college friends that have been invited to a hen party aka bachelorette party for a girl named Clare that they all new from school. Nora isn't really sure why she's been invited because she hasn't been in touch with Clare for years but she makes a pact with Nina to go, if she goes too. The party is a weekend overnight trip to a glass house in the middle of nowhere. From the start Nora feels like something is off and as the weekend progresses so does the drama. 48 hours later Nora wakes up in a hospital with no recollection of what exactly happened that last night.

I enjoyed this one a lot because the author did a fantastic job building the tension and keeping you guessing. The characters really added to the story too. They aren't all exactly likable but that's what makes this party interesting. In a lot of stories like this I'm usually constantly yelling at the characters because they do the stupidest things but I didn't have to do that much in this one which I really appreciated. There were only two parts where I was like "omg why *face palm*...

One was when the group, after being awakened at night to an open door swinging in the wind and footprints outside, instead of saying hey lets check the entire house for intruders, they just shut the door back, see that the TV and no major stuff was stolen in the main room and they go back to bed! Who does that really?

The second time was when Nora clearly suspects another guest of murder, she graciously accepts and drinks tea from this person, says to herself it tastes funny and then continues to drink it. She just watched this person crush meds into their own tea so why did it not dawn on her that hey maybe there is something in mine too? Duh! Again- who does that?!

(show spoiler)

Overall, it was a nice Saturday night thriller and a fantastic debut for Ruth Ware. Once I started reading I didn't want to put it down until I finished.
